We’ve mentioned here before how back on the 27th of August an American woman named Anne Sacoolas allegedly drove out of a US air force facility in the UK on the wrong side of the road and then allegedly was involved in a crash that killed a young motorcyclist, Harry Dunn. Ms Sacoolas was questioned by the police, claimed diplomatic immunity and said that she would remain in the country. In the event her employers advised her to get out fast and she promptly did so. The affair has caused something of a storm in the UK and the politicians have become involved with pressure on the Americans to waive immunity. It’s n ow escalated to that nice Mr Trump who was pictured holding a briefing note reading “(If raised) Note, as Secretary Pompeo told Foreign Secretary Raab, that the spouse of the US government employee will not return to the United Kingdom.”

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s what that Mr Trump had to say on the matter:

“The woman was driving on the wrong side of the road, and that can happen.

“You know, those are the opposite roads, that happens. I won’t say it ever happened to me, but it did.

“So a young man was killed, the person that was driving the automobile has diplomatic immunity, we’re going to speak to her very shortly and see if we can do something where they meet.”

What all that means is as muc h your guess as mine but the chances of the victim’s family getting anything like justice are about those of the proverbial snowball in Hell.

From South Carolina. Her husband Jonathan is officially in the diplomatic service and less officially is a CIA operative .

There’s an offici al agreement that Americans working at the CIA base air base can claim immunity.

I mean, South Carolinians drive on the wrong side over here, so this is par for the course. She would have gotten away here too.

I can think of a few reasons why, even if she wanted to be trialed, getting a fair trial would be nigh-on impossible. The US government should pay for the funeral costs and counseling  for the family; but putting her in a trial won’t be a solution.

Its a very sad story... but its so much more complex that a typical case that there cannot be a regular solution.

If we want to avoid these; diplomats should either barred from driving or trained on how to do it safely abroad.

It’s unfortunate. I won’t say it’s right, but that seems to be standard for all those that have serious crashes. Claim immunity and flee.

Why? If you or I had run this poor guy down, we’d be facing trial.

If Mr. Dunn had been in the States and turned this lady into a pancake, and somehow managed to flee with diplomatic immunity, redneck Americans would be dumping tea in harbors and standing guard at embassies with torches and pitchforks.

Just because she gets fucked by a CIA agent shouldn’t give her the ability to kill with immunity.

because we’re not diplomatic staff in a foreign country with deep ties and interests with the US. Yes, she was careless, and yes she did cause the death of the motorcyclist... but how do you put a representative of a foreign government to trial without having a conflict of interest?

This was very probably involuntary manslaughter; and there’s a chance that even if she faced a trial she wouldn’t go to jail.

Sh e had been in the country three weeks. She’s admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road.

The incident happened between Croughton and RAF Croughton, less than one mile and there is footage of her leaving the base on the wrong side of the road.

I doesn’t need to be reduced, they just need to pull their head out of their arse . There’s provisions in the Vienna Convention for both nations to come to an agreement about prosecution.

Hard to argue between that and “it’s ok if ISIS fighters escape because they’ll just go to Europe”. Or his best wisdom tweet about punishing Turkey.

Dude is begging for the 25th amendment.

This whole story pisses me off. My parents lived in the   DC area   before I was born, and my mom once had a bad wreck with her Celica. Apparently, a question they asked drivers up there is whether or not they’re diplomats. If they were, they got immunity (so if they were the ones at fault, they got a free pass). I always thought that was so stupid, and here we go seeing it actually happen with a fatality. So what you represent a foreign country? Doesn’t mean you can get away with whatever.
